Over a week ago, my brake proportioning valve (BPV) let go on the wagon. Ford no longer makes the part. I went to the parts department at Ford, to view where the valve was, and also to what it looks like.
This part is not only hard to find, you have to buy it when you do find it right away. The only place, currently that you can find it, is in a salvage yard (junkyard). I had to use the VIN (vehicle information number) for the car, and/or the Ford part number, which I also have.
The valve is only for 91-95 Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable wagons. It does not matter if it is all-wheel ABS or not. It is a two piece valve. One section is for the front brakes and the other one the rear. Its the seal on it that goes bad. Don't drive the car if it is leaking, you can lose your brakes!
It took me 4 days to find and put the part on hold, so that I could buy it on payday. I went through a lot of salvage/junk yards to find the part. My car was on a friend's lift for 6 days! I had to borrow a car to work. The part is a pain in the butt to take out/put in. You have to make sure you bleed the brakes after installation.
Below is what the brake proportioning valve for the wagon looks like. Located by the frame near the wheel on the driver's side of the car. It's hard to see unless you have the car in the air, either jacked up with a jack or on a lift.
I have been informed that there is a company that buys licensing to remake parts that have been discontinued. So I am currently looking into that - to see if I can have the part remade for those of us who are still driving our wagons.
